When the power fails, will your generator start?
Of course, you say. A standby generator self tests weekly to make sure it is working properly. But, if you are not there, do you know if it passed or failed the test? This is not something you’ll want to discover during a power outage.
Now, verification can be performed automatically and reliably.
The Generator Self-test Verifier (GSV) fills an essential need in every standby generator maintenance plan. It verifies that the auto-start exercise was performed and indicates the result. After a successful test, it resumes monitoring and makes no report. If a proper and complete auto-start self-test is not performed, an audible alarm is sounded and an optional off-site monitoring service is called. The alarm continues until the GSV is reset. All output voltages and all test cycle schedules are supported.
Why do I need this for my generator?
In its back up role, we depend on our standby unit to perform when and as needed, but we also know that a generator is a machine and machines need service. A generator may be on the job for years before maintenance is needed. It may never fail to perform the regular testing cycle in all those years, but you are not sure unless you monitor the test and record or report the outcome. The GSV stands in for you at test time and signals an unsatisfactory outcome so that appropriate action may be taken.
There are many generators on the market and they produce various voltages and exercise at different times. The Generator Self-test Verifier supports all makes and models, all voltages, all phases and all auto-start exercise programs. It is a universal solution to a universal problem. GSV features solid state technology and advanced design to assure performance and reliability. The Generator Self-test Verifier is a patent-pending, UL listed device and is backed by a one-year warranty and Transtar’s many years of expertise in both the electrical contracting and security businesses.
How does it work?
The Generator Self Test Verifier (GSV) is an electronic device that monitors the generator voltage output. During a generator auto-start exercise, the GSV monitors the voltage for a period of two minutes and checks to make sure that the voltage is in a range of plus or minus 10 per cent of the correct output. If it detects the correct voltage for the prescribed time, it will reset and wait for the next exercise. If the GSV does not see the correct voltage for the two minute period, it will then go into the alarm condition, sounding an audible alarm and will close a set of auxiliary contacts. These auxiliary contacts invoke an optional digital communicator, if installed.
The GSV will remain in alarm condition until it is reset manually. At this time it will start the monitoring process again.
The GSV supports all voltages:
1 phase 120V-240V,
3 phase 120V-208V,
3 phase 277V-480V,
3 phase 220V-380V,
3 phase 240V,
3 phase 480V.
It supports four different exercise cycles times: 8 days, 15 days, 22 days, and 31 days. The GSV also has a five minute test cycle for use in set up.
It is an alarming fact that during a recent widespread power outage, less than half of the stand-by generators in the affected area started as expected. Have the Generator Self-test Verifier installed with the optional remote monitoring package and you'll know that you're in that "Not to Worry" group of owners who are confident their generators will perform when needed. Verify...and know.
